Other Malls
Southdale was very successful and it became the first of over 1,000 indoor, climate-controlled shopping malls in the country. Following in Southdale's footsteps three other Dales were quickly built in the Twin Cities' suburbs: Rosedale, Ridgedale and Brookdale. They all had a similar design concept.
Ten years after Southdale opened, Crossroads Center opened. It is about 90 miles northwest of Southdale near Saint Cloud, Minnesota. When it opened, Crossroads had space for about 30 stores and it was the third largest shopping mall in the state.
At the time it was built, each store had an automatic sliding glass door onto the mall areas so people didn't have to open any doors once they were inside. Just like Southdale, Crossroads was temperature controlled. It had greenery and flowers and two decorative water fountains. JC Penney, one of its anchor stores, had a cafe and a beauty salon. Crossroads had some of the elements of a community center like Victor Gruen hoped for.
